Travel Diaries: Sayulita Mexico

travel diaries Sayulita Mexico

When your bestie tells you she's rented a massive villa in your favourite little Mexican surf town for 10 of your friends, you say YES and start packing immediately. It had been exactly 5 years since we last visited Sayulita, and, as expected, it had changed a lot. More crowded, touristy, and expensive than we remembered, but somehow, it hadn't lost any of it's magic.

That may have had something to do with the fact that we were staying at probably the best casa in town with the best views and obvi the best people. Have a look-see for yourself why we're still in love with this colourful happy place, and why it was so damn hard to leave.

Colourful Sayulita Mexico

My travel outfit was made up of a full Show Me Your Mumu peacock print ensemble from our very first season which I still get crazy compliments on. A bunch of little old ladies pulled me aside in the airport and were totally digging it. Husband thought I looked crazy but he's used to it and even agreed to take my photo this one time.

We arrived at the house casa giant mansion and were greeted by this guy floating in the pool, so everything was basically already perfect.

Sayulita Mexico

If you rent a villa in Sayulita make sure it's located on one of the hills because THOSE VIEWS. We were on "Gringo Hill" this time but had previously stayed on the hill at the south end of town with equally killer vistas.  Plus the walk back up the hill from town counts as your cardio for the week. Seriously in that heat, we sweated

The town itself is busy, bustling and crazy colourful. You have your choice of loads of amazing restaurants and shops crammed into a few small blocks. There's also beach service, but be warned, do not eat the beach meat they sell on a stick or the oysters they've been carrying up and down the beach in the hot sun. Just don't do it.  Rustica is a great Italian restaurant for when you eventually get sick of Mexican food.

Obviously we wanted to bring back every single woven textile but we couldn't fit it all in...

We did however bring back a bunch of good luck charm pom poms and hand made stuffed animals which will be available at our upcoming Pop-Up! That is if we can bare to part with them.

I don't know if we can. Seriously, how amazing would these be in a kid's room??

Like everywhere in Mexico, the town is full of stray cats and dogs and we wanted to adopt all of them, so badly.  Look at that face!

One of our cats is actually named after a cat we met the last time we were in Sayulita. We still think Minky is a weird name for a Mexican cat but it really suits our little idiot.

Our friend Faith wore her Resort Maxi almost the entire trip, it made us so happy! Currently in stock in flamingo, grey and black!

I brought my round towel and used it every single day as well. The pool, the beach, on the boat, as a blanket. You can grab one here!

The husband and I stayed a few nights in our own little Casa for a bit of privacy. It was just ok. (cry-lauging emoji)

Another thing we would seriously recommend is booking a boat day and heading out to some of the amazing little islands and hidden beaches in the area.  This beach was only accessible by boat, about a half hour south of Puerto Vallarta.

I wish I could tell you the name, but it escapes me.

If you get the chance we also highly recommend renting a car and exploring some of the other little towns along the coast. In San Pancho we found the peace and quiet that was missing from Sayulita, so obviously that will be the next town ruined by tourists.

We probably shouldn't even have mentioned it. Please don't tell anyone else.

We almost forgot to mention these awesome beach bags which are coming to the shop soon, hand made in Toronto from mexican textiles by our friend Nicole Manek! Used ours every single day.

All amazing accommodation was booked through Sayulita Life. We hope to be living that life again someday very soon...
